Location: Anchovy, Jamaica

Identification

5 ins (13cm). A large hummingbird. Male has reddish-purple cheeks and sides of the neck, velvety black underparts, purplish-blue wings and an iridescent greenish-blue back. Female is similar but duller.

Distribution

Jamaica.

Taxonomy

A species of hummingbird in the Trochilidae family (Linnaeus, 1758). Endemic to Jamaica.

Habitat

Gardens, wood edges, clusters of trees and banana plantations.

Behaviour

Voice: sharp, raspy, tics.
