Identification
Distribution
Southern Europe, steppes of C Asia and north Africa.
Taxonomy
More than 10 subspecies recognized.
Pallidirostris from the steppes of C Asia is sometimes considered a full species called Steppe Grey Shrike. However this split is not yet accepted by any of the big world lists.
Habitat
Dry open country.
Behaviour
The diet includes large insects, small birds, rodents and lizards. Like other shrikes it hunts from prominent perches, and impales corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a "larder".
