Pauxi unicornis

Identification

I85-95 cm. All-black, with white vent and tip to tail. Bright red bill and pale blue, long, horn-shaped casque. Pale red legs. Female like male, but also has a rufous colour phase.

Central Bolivia and central and east Peru.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • P. u. koepckeae
  • P. u. unicornis

The first of these have been proposed for status as full species: Sira Curassow, Pauxi koepckeae[2]

Habitat

Lower montane forest and adjacent lowland evergreen forest.

Behaviour

Diet

Its diet includes fruit, seeds, soft plants, larvae and insects.

Breeding

1 egg is laid.
