- Reinwardtoena reinwardtii
Identification
At about 51-52 cm (including the long tail-feathers) this is an impressive large cuckoo-dove, immature birds look washed with grey and brown feathers. One of the most elegant flyers in the dove world but getting a flight shot is far from easy.
Distribution
Found throughout New Guinea, the islands of the Geelvink bay, West Papuan islands, the Moluccas, Karkar island and DEntrecasteaux islands
Taxonomy
Polytypic. Consists of three subspecies.
Habitat
Hill forests.
Behaviour
Their diet consists mainly of fruit taken from the canopy where they spend most of the time, seldom seen on the jungle floor. Their big sizes make them a favourite hunting target as a food source and that's the cause of their number being reduced dramatically in the last 10 years both in Biak and Yapen islands in the Geelvink bay.
