Identification
30 cm
Large size, strong blackish bill, broad blackish-brown eyestripe, large yellow patch on lower sides of head and pale greyish-buff throat with narrow blue border
Distribution
South-east Asia: found in Indochina, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Borneo, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra
Taxonomy
Sometimes placed in the genus Psilopogon.
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies, sometimes split into two species[1]:
- Golden-faced Barbet
- M. c. laeta:
- South-western Thailand and Malay Peninsula; possibly extreme southern Burma
- M. c. chrysopogon:
- Gold-faced Barbet
- M. c. chrysopsis:
Habitat
Lowland evergreen forest.
Behaviour
Diet
As they feed mostly in the canopy, little is known about their diet, but they have been observed feeding on palm fruits and it is thought they eat insects too.
