Identification
Length 39cm
Greyish-brown to blackish-brown above finely spotted with white. Whitish to pale buff below, heavily barred with black. Head has black crest, long and thin and curving forwards, and dusky stripe behind eye bordered above and below by white stripes.
Distribution
South America: found in North-west, central and southern Argentina and a small area in southern Chile. Resident.

Subspecies
There are 10 subspecies[1]:
- E. e. intermedia: Andes of north-western Argentina (Salta to Catamarca)
- E. e. magnistriata: Andes of north-western Argentina (Tucumán and northern Córdoba)
- E. e. riojana: Andes of north-western Argentina (La Rioja and San Juan)
- E. e. albida: Dry savanna of western Argentina (San Juan)
- E. e. wetmorei: Andean foothills in western Argentina (north-central Mendoza)
- E. e. devia: South-western Argentina at base of Andes (Neuquén)
- E. e. numida: Dry grasslands of central Argentina
- E. e. multiguttata: Dry grasslands of east-central Argentina
- E. e. elegans: Central Argentina (Río Negro and Neuquén)
- E. e. patagonica: Southern Argentina (Neuquén to Santa Cruz) and adjacent southern Chile
Habitat
Dry scrub, grasslands and open woodland.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes seeds, leaves, fruits and insects.
Breeding
Both sexes form a hollow in the ground which serves as the nest. The male incubates the eggs and cares for the young.
