- Batrachostomus harterti
Identification
34 - 37 cm. Slightly sexually dimorphic, mainly in size and saturation of ground colour. Head and upperparts dark chestnut brown. Crown and nape barred buffish-white. Narrow buff half collar across the base of the neck. Mantle to uppertail coverts barred and speckled blackish, broader on the rump and uppertail coverts. Scapulars with a broad subteminal black bar and a large whitish tip. Large, upstanding plume of hair-like feathers on the forehead, lores and ear coverts black with 3-4 long, dirty white plumes from the rear of the eye. Median and greater wing coverts spotted whitish with a thin black margin at the tip, primaries speckled buff ( only on the outer webs ? ). Uppertail somewhat paler than the rest of the upperparts with c. 7 tawny bars thinly margined blackish. Underparts are dark chestnut brown on the chin, throat and upperbreast, then fading out to pale dirty greyis on the undertail coverts. All underpart feathers with a pale buff, shallow " V " shaped subterminal bar. The underside of the tail is a washed out mirror of the uppertail. The eye is large and dark, with a bold pale eyering, the bill is yellowish horn and the legs and feeta are whiteish-grey.
Distribution
Endemic to Borneo.
Only known from Gunung Dulit and the Usun Apau plateau in Sarawak, Kelabit Highlands on the borders of Sarawak, Sabah and Kalimantan and Gunung Liang Kubung in Kalimantan Burat.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Submontane moist forest between 300 and 1700 m.
Behaviour
Probably the same as other Batrachostomus Frogmouths, as are it's food preferences, but little, if anything. is known of its habits. Voice unknown, but recordings made within the areas where Dulit Frogmouth is known to be found sound similar to Large Frogmouth, a species that is found at much lower altitudes.
