48-60cm. Male - black breast, red head and neck, white body, red iris, black bill. Female - brown body and head, black bill.
Distribution
United States, the Great Lakes and British Columbia.

Habitat
Prairie wetlands; winter - coasts, saltwater bays, estuaries or lakes.
Behaviour
The nest, built from vegetation, is lined with down and placed in a marsh.
The diet includes aquatic plants, molluscs, aquatic insects and small fish.
