Widespread in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Taxonomy

Nilaus is a monotypic genus.

Nilaus afer has ten subspecies:

  • N. l. afer;
  • N. l. camerunensis;
  • N. l. hilgerti;
  • N. l. minor;
  • N. l. massaicus;
  • N. l. solivagus;
  • N. l. miombensis;
  • N. l. nigritemporalis; and
  • N. l. affinis;
  • N. l. brubru.
