Found from the Thai-Malay Peninsula (comprising south Tenasserim, southern Thailand, Peninsula Malaysia and Singapore) to Sumatra and Borneo.

Subspecies abbotti may be split as "Simeulue Parrot", P. abbotti. If so that leaves the other subspecies (cyanurus, pontius) as "Blue-rumped Parrot", P. cyanurus (strict sense)

Taxa we include here which Clements recognises [1]:

  • P. c. cyanurus: Southern Thailand to southern Tennasserim in southern Myanmar, Peninsula Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo
  • P. c. abbotti: "Simeulue Parrot". Simeulue and Siumat islands (off west coast of Sumatra)
  • P. c. pontius: Mentawi Island (Siberut, Sipura, North Pagai and South Pagai)

Lowland forest areas, below 700m, open woodland, orchards and plantations, mangroves, dense scrub, and coconut groves.

The diet includes seeds, fruit and blossoms.
