  • All black
  • Bulbous bill
    • Some yellow around the nostrils

Female

  • Brown
  • Pale cheeks

Similar Species

The female may be confused with American Scoter.

Distribution

Taxonomy

Formerly considered conspecific with its North American counterpart, which has been split as the American Scoter M. americana.
