Icterus wagleri

Identification

• Black hood, upper back, wings, and tail, including vent
• Yellow-orange underparts and lower back
• Slender black bill
• Grey legs and feet

Similar Species

Adult is similar to Black-cowled Oriole but has black undertail coverts and vent.

Distribution

Mexico (where found in the interior and pacific slope) south to Nicaragua.

Taxonomy

Subspecies^[1]

This is a polytypic species, consisting of two subspecies:

• I. w. castaneopectus:

• Arid scrub of north-western Mexico (southern Sonora to northern Sinaloa and Chihuahua)

• I. w. wagleri:

• Highlands of western Mexico (Sinaloa and Coahuila) to northern Nicaragua

Habitat

Arid scrub and deciduous forests; second-growth woods and roadside shrubs.

Behaviour

Diet

Forages in trees and bushes for insects, berries and fruit.
