Identification
16.5 cm. Grey head, broad black stripes each side of crown, narrower black stripes through each eye, olive upperparts, yellow on the bend of the wing, dull white underparts shading to grey on the breast sides, olive lower belly. Young birds have brown stripes on a yellower head, brownish-olive upperparts and yellow-olive underparts.
Distribution
Northern Honduras to western Ecuador, northern Brazil and Venezuela.
Taxonomy
There are 6 subspecies.
Habitat
Humid lowlands and foothills up to 1500 m altitude, in semi-open habitats such as thickets, young second growth, overgrown fields and shady plantations and gardens.
Behaviour
The female builds the large domed nest from coarse plant material; it has a wide side entrance. 2 unmarked white eggs are laid and incubated by the female alone for 12-14 days.
The diet includes insects, spiders, seeds and berries.
