Bass Rock
Bass Rock is a small, privately owned island off the east coast of Scotland in the outer Firth of Forth. It is famous for its gannetry and the Northern Gannet's scientific name Sula bassana refers to this island. This 90m volcanic rock is home to more than 10,000 pairs of Gannets which now breed on the sloping summit of the island having outgrown the cliffs. Other breeding species include Northern Fulmar and Shag, Kittiwake, Common Guillemot, Razorbill and Atlantic Puffin. Craigneath is a nearby island with a similar range of breeding species but no Gannets. There are daily boat trips to Bass Rock during the summer, weather permitting, from North Berwick, contact Fred Marr, Tel. North Berwick 2838, for details.
