Identification

Red crest with yellow tip, red wings, dull greenish mantle with pale wavy barrings together with chestnut underparts marked with whitish barrings diagnostic. Male=Red sides of head...Female=Sides of head brownish with white spots.

Distribution

Tenasserim (Myanmar) , Malay Peninsula, Java, Sumatra, and Borneo.

Taxonomy

The scientific name is sometimes spelled as mineaceus instead miniaceus.

Habitat

Forests and forests edges, mangroves, coastal scrub, plantations.

Behaviour

Usually frequents the middle and lower storeys in pairs or small groups.Forages largely among vines and rotting wood.

Vocalisation

Short strident pi-eew on a falling tone.
