Identification

  • Upperparts, head and upper breast: brownish-black with dark streaks
  • White underparts
  • Dark brown mottled flanks
  • Dark wings with white tips
  • White shoulders
  • Broad white tip on dark tail
  • Pinkish-grey legs and feet

Distribution

Endemic to Mexico. Occasionally recorded in Arizona and Texas.

Taxonomy

Monotypic[1]

Subspecies maternalis2] is not recognised by all authorities

Habitat

Moist montane forests.

Behaviour

The diet includes fruit.
