Head, wings, and tail are black with white spots. The undertail is bright yellow and the rump in chestnut red

Spend most of their time feeding on insects in the canopy. Also forage close to the ground where they can be viewed easily. These birds nest in holes excavated in loose soil and hollow trees. They will nest in drainage pipes or under eaves. Susceptible to attack by feral predators when nesting in the ground.
