- Phasianus colchicus
Description
Woodland Area by the River Wear.
Identification
ALSO KNOWN AS RING NECKED PHEASANT
Green Pheasant
The Kiji, or Japanese Green Pheasant, P. c. versicolor, has been considered a separate species by some (e.g. Johnsgard, The Pheasants of the World, OUP 1986). Resident through Honshu, Kyushu, and Shikoku, Japan, the male's glossy green neck, back and underparts are distinctive. Not uncommon in cultivated and open areas, but it can be quite unobtrusive.
