Identification
19·5–21 cm (7¾-8¼ in) Red frons, white underparts with pinkish wash on belly and black thighs are diagnostic.
Distribution
Africa: Gabon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- P. m. minor: Southern Gabon and western Zaire to western Angola and
- P. m. macclounii (Mcclouni's Barbet): South-central Zaire to central Angola, northern Zambia, Malawi and western Tanzania
Some authorities split this taxon into two species
Habitat
Riverine woodland and forest edge and adjacent cultivation.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet has been little recorded but appears to consist of fruit, such as figs, berries, seeds, and flying insects.
