Distribution
South-east Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Borneo, Brunei, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra
Taxonomy
Sometimes placed in the genus Megalaima.
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized:[1]
- P. m. mystacophanos:
- South-western Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo
- P. m. ampalus:
- Batu Islands (off western Sumatra)
Habitat
Moist lowland and dipterocarp forests and secondary forests. Also swamps.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mainly of fruit, particularly figs; lso insect larvae and snails, thought to be part of courtship routine.
Breeding
They construct a nest in an excavated tree hole, laying 2-4 white, glossy eggs.
