Identification
18.5 cm.
- Bright chestnut-rufous crown and head side
- White eyering and white lores
- Olive-brown rest of upperparts
- Tawny-brown wings and dull brown tail (slightly reddish)
- White throat
- Pale to medium grey breast and belly, darkest on breast side and flanks
- Flanks with olive wash
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Andes of southeast Peru and west Bolivia to extreme northwest Argentina.
A locally common to uncommon restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Birds from Jujuy in northwestern Argentina have been described as subspecies cinereiventris (having a darker belly and sepia-olive flanks), however the validity of this taxon requires more confirmation.
Habitat
Found on floor and lower undergrowth in moist montane forest.
Occurs at 800 to 1700 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Recorded feeding on caterpillars, cockroaches, other insects and spiders.
Hops on the ground, stopping frequently and tilting its head to one side.
Breeding
No information.
Movements
Presumably a sedentary species.
