Western Africa: Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea Gabon, Congo, Angola
Eastern Africa: Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania
African Islands: Gulf of Guinea Islands, Bioko (Fernando Po), Sao Tome, Principe
Popular cage pet, escapes can turn up anywhere.

Two subspecies are recognized:
- P. e. timneh:
- Southern Guinea to Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mali and western Ivory Coast - sometimes accepted as full species, Timneh Parrot
- P. e. erithacus:
