Identification
16,5 - 17,5cm. A distinctive broadbill with prominent blue eye wattles.
- Maroon-purple forehead and crown
- Black face and throat
- White collar
- Dark grey mantle and black, lower back to tail rufous
- Black wings with prominent white wing bar with some yellow on secondaries
- Lilac underparts, centre of belly to vent yellowish-white
- Blue eye wattles
- Light blue bill
Females similar but with white underparts.
Distribution
Found on Mindanao and some adjacent islands, Philippines.
An uncommon to rare restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
Placed in genus Eurylaimus by Clements (2010)[1].
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- S. s.steerii
- Philippines (Basilan, Malamaui and Zamboanga Peninsula of Mindanao)
- S. s.mayri
- S Philippines (Dinagat, Poneas, Siargao and Mindanao)
Sometimes considered conspecific with Visayan Broadbill.
Habitat
Humid tropical lowland or montane forest. Also sometimes in mangroves and scrub forest. Usually found well under 1000m, occasionally up to 1200m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on insects.
Forages at lower and middle levels, singly in pairs or small groups of up to 6 birds. Sometimes also in mixed-species flocks.
Breeding
Main breeding season probably April to June. The nest is a large, elaborate, shaped like hanging purse. No other information.
A resident species.
