Identification

  • Mainly grey
  • Black patch on side of neck
  • Rufous-edged wing coverts
  • Red brown iris
  • Grey bill

Distribution

Africa and southwestern Arabia
Western Africa: occurs only in Cameroon and Democratic Republic of Congo
Eastern Africa: Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi
Middle East: Arabian Peninsula, Saudi Arabia and Yemen

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Three subspecies: funebrea, bishaensis and rabica are generally considered invalid[2].

Habitat

Alpine moorland, bush, rocky slopes in upland grassland. Observed at heights over 4000 meters.
