Identification
17 cm. Dull grey with olivaceous tinge, slightly paler on belly, orange-rufous forecrown, eyebrow, spot below eye, throat and upper breast and undertail-coverts, small dark bill. Sexes similar, although female has slightly reduced breast patch. Immature brownish above, buffier below with brown stripes.
Distribution
Endemic to the Tucuman Mountain area of Argentina and Bolivia.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
It was formerly placed in Poospiza.
Habitat
This finch is best looked for in streamside bushes or in grassy areas adjacent to streams betweeen 2000 and 3000m. Although quite a bright bird with its red head and vent , the noise of these fast flowing streams tends to drown out the call of the finch. Moist montanes and high-altitude shrubland.
Behaviour
Terrestrial.
2-3 eggs are laid.
The diet includes seeds and some insects.
