Identification
28cm. It has a brown plumage, a horn-coloured bill, yellow legs and a brown iris. The underparts of the female are whitish and more heavily black barred than in the male.
Distribution
Snow Mountains of Irian Jaya, New Guinea. Lives above 3,000m.
Taxonomy
It is the only member of the genus Anurophasis.
Habitat
It inhabits high grassland plateaux and the edge of heavy alpine scrub with trees, between c.3,000 and 4,200 m.
Behaviour
3 pale brown, dark-spotted eggs are laid in a hollow nest under the edge of a grass tussock.
The diet includes seeds, flowers, leaves and other vegetation matters.
