Serilophus lunatus

Identification

Broad black supercillium, greyish white crown, light blue bill and narrow lemon yellow orbital skin diagnostic. Upper parts greyish brown with chestnut rump; underparts greyish white, wings black with blue patch, tail black with white outer tail feathers. Female (in picture) has a narrow silvery white breast band. Note: claws appear silvery-white too. (check other pictures in Gallery.)

Distribution

The Himalayas, southern China and Myanmar through Southeast Asia and the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra.

Taxonomy

Clements (1) recognises 10 sub-species:

Serilophus lunatus rubropygius NE India, Bhutan and e Bangladesh to ne Myanmar

Serilophus lunatus atrestus Cent. Myanmar to s China, ne Thailand, Laos and nw Vietnam

Serilophus lunatus elisabethae SE China (se Yunnan and sw Guangxi) and e Tonkin

Serilophus lunatus polionotus Mountains of Hainan I.

Serilophus lunatus lunatus S-c and s Myanmar and adjacent nw Thailand

Serilophus lunatus stolidus S Myanmar and peninsular Thailand (except extreme south)

Serilophus lunatus aphobus SE Thailand and Cambodia

Serilophus lunatus impavidus S Laos (Bolaven Plateau)

Serilophus lunatus rothschildi Malay Peninsula and extreme s peninsular Thailand

Serilophus lunatus intensus Sumatra

Habitat

Forest and forest edges.

Behaviour

Frequents the canopy and middle story. Usualy solitary or in pairs but may sometimes gather in small parties. Generally unobtrusive,sitting quietly on a high perch. Shy bird.
