24–28 cm. Brown head, back, wings, black flight feathers, white belly, black underwings, short bill, long forked tail.
Distribution
Breeds from Romania to southwestern Russia and northern Kazakhstan; winters to South Africa.
Taxonomy
A monotypic species.
Habitat
Open country near water.
Behaviour
2-4 eggs are laid on the ground.
The diet includes insects, either caught aerially or found on the ground.
