Identification

Length: 6.75" (17 cm). Head and neck gray, back olive, underparts bright yellow. In some subspecies, throat and crest is white.

Distribution

Southern Mexico through Central America and South America south to Bolivia and Argentina. There are gaps in the distribution, such that for example most of Venezuela and parts of northern Brazil is without this species.

Taxonomy

Seven subspecies are recognized1: penicillata, pallida, spodocephala, strictothorax, cristata, albicollis, and affinis.

Habitat

Understory of humid woodlands and forest in lowlands.

Behaviour

Follows army ant swarms.
