Identification

Length: 6.75" (17 cm). Head and neck gray, back olive, underparts bright yellow. In some subspecies, throat and crest is white.

Southern Mexico through Central America and South America south to Bolivia and Argentina. There are gaps in the distribution, such that for example most of Venezuela and parts of northern Brazil is without this species.

Seven subspecies are recognized¹: penicillata, pallida, spodocephala, strictothorax, cristata, albicollis, and affinis.

Understory of humid woodlands and forest in lowlands.

Follows army ant swarms.
