Identification

Sandy-olive, very long, narrow, pointed black wings, deep chestnut brown and black patch on flanks, long dark grey, brownish or dark red legs and feet . When breeding, the bill is bright red, otherwise mostly black. Non breeding plumage is duller with blackish spotting on the throat and smaller flank-marks.

Distribution

Breeds in Australia; winters to southern New Guinea and Greater Sundas.

Taxonomy

A monotypic species.

Habitat

Open inland plains, sparsely wooded plains, stony plains, tussock grasslands, arid and semi-arid areas, lowlands.

Behaviour

The diet includes insects, spiders and centipedes.

The nest is sometimes lined with small pebbles, dry vegetation or rabbit dung or sometimes the eggs are laid on bare ground in a hollow. Both sexes incubate the eggs and brood the young.
