Identification
30-36cm. Brown above spotted with white, rufous and dark barring on whitish background below, brown facial disk with white eyebrows, dark eyes, no ear tufts.
Distribution
Senegal, Gambia to Sudan south to Angola, Kenya, Zaire and down the east coast to South Africa.
Taxonomy
There are two subspecies;
- S w woodfordii South African Wood-Owl
- S w nigricantior East African Wood-Owl
Habitat
Forest and woodland also plantations.
Behaviour
The diet includes insects, reptiles, small mammals and birds.
They nest in a tree cavity. 1-3 eggs are laid and incubated for about 31 days. The young fledge at 5 weeks of age and can fly by 7 weeks. The young remain with parents up to 4 months and sometimes stay until the next breeding season.
