Identification
16–17 cm
- Rufous crown through to nape
- Black face
- Long bill
Distribution
South America: found in Ecuador and Peru.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- A. s. celicae:
- Andes of extreme southern Ecuador (western Loja)
- A. s. simonsi:
- Andes of extreme southern Ecuador (eastern and central Loja)
- A. s. seebohmi:
- Pacific slope of Andes of north-western Peru (La Libertad to Ancash)
Habitat
Dry forests and shrubby hillsides.
Behaviour
Diet
They forage close to or on the ground for large insects, fruits and seeds
