Identification
18–21·5 cm (7-8½ in)
Male
- Mottled brown crown
- Black in front of eyes
- Black throat separated from black eye-stripe by broad whitish stripe passing through ear region and down neck
- Underparts "scaly" black and white pattern
- Upperparts patterned with buff, brown, and black
Female
- Buffy chin and upper throat
- Nape feathers edged grey
- Ear feathers streaked buff
- White breast with dark shaft-streaks and cross-bars with two rows of terminal white spots
Distribution
Central America: found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua.

- South-eastern Mexico (Progresso area of Yucatán Peninsula)
- C. n. caboti:

Dry shrubland and seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, brush borders.
