Male
- Mainly black
- Chestnut cap and throat
Female
- Dull olive brown
- Yellow throat
Distribution
South America: found from French Guiana and Brazil to Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina.
Taxonomy
This species has previously been thought to belong to the genus Agelaius.
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized[1]:
- C. r. frontalis:
- French Guiana and eastern Brazil
- C. r. ruficapillus:
Habitat
Lowland marshes, reed beds and rice fields.
