Calyptorhynchus baudinii

Identification

34cm. Black plumage, feathers margined with grey-white, two central tail feathers black, the remainder white, helmet shaped crest, grey beak.

Distribution

White-tailed Black Cockatoo range across the south-west corner of Australia, from Kalbarri to Esperance.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species, which in the past was supposed to include Slender-billed Black Cockatoo.

Habitat

Old wandoo or marri woodland. Due to land clearing on the wheatbelt populations are now patchy and suitable breeding areas are reduced.

Behaviour

The White-tailed Black Cockatoo nests in vertical tree hollows. They feed on the seeds of proteaceous heath plants and have also adapted to feeding on pine nuts on plantations on the Perth coastal plain.
