Breeding is in early spring. As part of courtship, the male feeds the female. The female does the nest building. They nest in a hole in a tree, either a natural cavity or sometimes an old woodpecker nest. The nest is lined with soft materials, sometimes plucking hair from a live animal such as a dog. There are usually 4-8 white eggs with brown speckles.
