Identification
14 cm. Black, blue-green gloss, green on the back, red eye, pink eye ing, broad orange red bill, square tail. The sexes are similar, but juveniles are dull sooty brown.
Distribution
Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It winters in southern Gabon.
Taxonomy
Monotypic.
Habitat
Forested rivers with islands with sandy shores for breeding and coastal savanna.
Behaviour
It breeds in large colonies of up to 800 birds, each pair excavating a 1-2 m long tunnel in the sandbars. The pocket at the end of the tunnel has a few twigs and leaves to serve as a nest, and 2-4 unspotted white eggs are laid.
The diet includes mainly winged ants and other insects.
