Sitta yunnanensis


Identification

12cm. Bluey-grey, broad black stripe extending from the bill, through the eye and down the sides of the neck, white sides of the face and throat, pinkish-buff underparts, black bill, grey feet and a brown iris. Juveniles have a less bold eye stripe.

Distribution

China.

Taxonomy

Habitat

Mature pine forest, with little undergrowth.

Behaviour

They are arboreal. They inch up and down trunks and branches. They wedge nuts, insects and other food into crevices in the tree, and hack them open with their long, sturdy bill.

They nest in holes in trees or rocks; 4-10 eggs are laid.
