Ara rubrogenys

Identification

Highly endangered.

60cm. Main plumage green with areas of red on the forehead, bend-of-the-wing and underside of the wing, orange red shoulders, orange red patch on their sides. The upper flight feathers are blue and the lower flight feathers yellow. Their tail is green edged thickly with blue. Their beak and legs are dark grey and their iris's are orange.

Taxonomy

Habitat

Mountainous, semi-desert, cactus, thorny trees and scrubland.

Behaviour

It makes its nests in vertical fissures in cliff faces. 2-4 eggs are laid, and incubated for 26 days.

The diet includes seeds and cactus fruit.
