Phrygilus plebejus

Identification

11–11·5 cm
A small drab bird with plain whitish front; some subtle striping on wings and back. Back gray. Short conical bill.

Distribution

South America: found in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1]:

A third subspecies P. p. naroskyi is not recognised by all authorities[2]

Habitat

Dry shrubland, puna grassland at 3400-4500m, but occasionally seen much lower to around 1500 m or less.

Behaviour

Diet

Ground feeders. Their diet consists of seeds and arthropods.
