Distribution
Breeds colonially on South Georgia, Prince Edward Islands, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, Auckland Island, Campbell Island and Antipodes Islands, all islands situated in cold water areas.
Non-breeding birds disperse to coasts of southern Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Namibia, and in South America north to Peru and Brazil.
Taxonomy
Spectacled Petrel was formerly regarded as subspecies of this species.
Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- P. a. aequinoctialis: breeds from Falkland Islands and South Georgia eastward through southern Indian Ocean
- P. a. steadi: breeds in Campbell, Antipodes, and Auckland islands (New Zealand region)
Habitat
Open sea except when breeding.

The diet consists of squid, octopus, crustraceans such as krill and fish.
