Identification
25–38cm. Dark, brown above and black-streaked grey or white underparts. The bill, bare facial skin, neck and legs are bright red.
Distribution
Central belt of Africa and down the east coast to Tanzania.
Taxonomy
There are 7 subspecies.
Pternistis vs. Francolinus
Sibley & Monroe (1996) placed this species in the genus Pternistis, but this genus has not been recognized by Clements (2007) or Howard & Moore (2003), and the Opus follows in this consensus.
Habitat
Open scrub and thickets.
Behaviour
The nest is a bare scrape, and 3-9 eggs are laid.
Its diet includes seeds, tubers, roots, berries and grass stalks although it will also eat insects and their larvae.
