Finland

Overview

This small national park lies just inside Arctic Circle, on the edges of the mountain range that forms much of northern Finland. The park's main feature is a distinctively shaped, isolated mountain, 540m high, with steep, sides, rocky outcrops and deep boulder-strewn ravines. There are some forested areas but much of the park consists of open moss and sedge fenland, known as "aapa".

Birdlife is not particularly varied but there are Rough-legged Buzzard, Siberian Jay and Siberian Tit.

There are marked hiking trails, tourist lodge and campsite within the park which is easily reached by road, 50km north of Kemijarvi. The park has an information centre on the Pelkosenniemi road and from here visitors can take a number of trails or a chairlift to the higher areas.
