Identification
30-35 cm. A large woodcock with shortish, rounded wings.
- Blackish upperparts with red-brown markings
- Almost unbarred ochre-buff underparts
- Similar pattern above like Eurasian Woodcock and Amami Woodcock but darker above and with much brighter almost unbarred underparts
Seasonal and sex differences undescribed. Juveniles also undescribed.
Distribution
Endemic to the mountains of Sulawesi.
A very poorly known species, seldom recorded.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- S. c. heinrichi in the mountains of northeast Sulawesi
- S. c. celebensis in the mountains of central Sulawesi
Closely related to Moluccan Woodcock and sometimes considered conspecific with it.
Habitat
Found in dense, mature montane forest with thick undergrowth.
Occurs at 1100 to 2500 m.
Behaviour
Runs when disturbed.
Diet
Recorded feeding in wet spots like puddles of water made by wild pigs.
Breeding
No information available.
Movements
An apparently sedentary species.
