Eastern and central New Guinea.
Taxonomy
Formerly lumped within White-striped Forest Rail (R. leucospila).
Sometimes placed in genus Rallicula.

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

- New Guinea (Weyland Mountains to Bismarck Mountains)
- R. f. parva:
- North-eastern New Guinea (Mount Mengam in Adelbert Range)
- R. f. dryas:
- South-eastern New Guinea (Huon Peninsula)

- South-eastern New Guinea (Herzog Mountains to Owen Stanley Mountains)
