- Bright green overall plumage
- Red shoulders, forecrown, thighs and leading edge on underwing
- Black tail
- Large black bill
- Amber eyes (brown in juvenile).
Distribution
Sierra Madre Occidental in north-western Mexico; post breeding dispersal mainly follows the same mountains going south from breeding area. Historic range included Arizona in the USA.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Maroon-fronted Parrot has in the past been considered a part of this species.
Habitat
Temperate conifer, pine, mature pine-oak and fir forests from 1200 to 3600m.
Behaviour

They nest in tree cavities, especially old woodpecker holes.

The diet consists mostly of seeds from various pine species.
