Identification
44 - 50cm (17¼-19¾ in)
- plumage mostly rufous
- crown grey
- back olive-grey
- wings wine-rufous
- eye red
- bill black
Subspecies rufescens more rufous on head, back and breast Juveniles similar to adults but with paler throat and breast and light grey eye.
Distribution
Endemic to Sulawesi and adjacent islands (Indonesia).
Locally common but status and biology poorly known.
Taxonomy
Forms a superspecies with Rufous Coucal.
Subspecies
Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:
- C. c. celebensis: Northern Sulawesi and Togian Islands
- C. c. rufescens: Central and southern Sulawesi, Labuan Blanda, Muna and Butung islands
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and montanes.
Behaviour
Behaviour similar to malkohas. Often climbs through lianas and thick foliage and often in small groups. Frequently associate with malkohas and macaques.
Diet
Feeds on large insects, mainly Orthoptera, locusts and beetles.
Breeding
No information about breeding.
Movements
This is a resident species.
