Identification
A distinctive Sparrow-Lark due to the adult male's white crown patch (this varies in size between individuals and may not be visible).
Similar Species
Similar to Fischer's Sparrow-Lark. This differs as follows:
- crown all chestnut
- nape chestnut without white (Chestnut-headed has a white patch at the nape and dark surround to the white ear patch is incomplete
- Fischer's appears less neat than Chestnut-headed as the brown colours tend to bleed into the white.
Distribution
Endemic to north-eastern Africa, occuring in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:
- E. s. signatus Southern and eastern Ethiopia, Somalia, and eastern Kenya
- E. s. harrisoni Southeastern South Sudan and northwestern Kenya
Habitat
Arid plains, often near water holes.
