Taxonomy

There are deep mitchondrial DNA divergences between some races which suggests this taxon should be split into multiple species [3]

Subspecies

Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:

  • M. c. cinerascens: Wallacea (Sulawesi and adjacent islands, Moluccas, and Lesser Sundas)
  • M. c. inornatus: North-western New Guinea, Aru, Waigeo, Salawati and Misool islands
  • M. c. steini: Numfor Island (New Guinea)
  • M. c. geelvinkianus: Yapen and Biak islands (New Guinea)
  • M. c. fuscescens: Islands in Geelvink Bay (northern New Guinea)
  • M. c. nigrirostris: Coastal northern New Guinea (Dagua to Huon Gulf)
  • M. c. fulviventris: Ninigo, Hermit, Anchorite and Admiralty islands
  • M. c. perpallidus: Bismarck Archipelago (Mussau, Tench, Lavongai, Djaul, Tabar Islands, Lihir Islands, and Tanga Islands)
  • M. c. impediens: Eastern Bismarck Archipelago to Solomon Islands
