Identification
30 cm. Flightless. Dark brown or black plumage, variable pale fringes on flanks and vent, grey head on Guadalcanal birds. Bill is usually pale cream or ivory but dark on Guadalcanal. Pale grey legs.
Distribution
Taxonomy
This species was formerly placed in genus Nesoclopeus. Current placement in Hypotaenidia is a consensus of H&M4 and IOC[2, 3].
This species has previously been considered a part of Bar-winged Rail (H. poecilopterus).
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized[1].
- H. w. tertius
- Bougainville I. (Solomon Islands)
- H. w. immaculatus
- Locally on Santa Isabel I. (Solomon Islands)
- H. w. woodfordi
- Guadalcanal I. (Solomon Islands)
Habitat
Lowland swamp forest, dense, grassy thickets mixed with forest thickets, abandoned gardens, especially close to rivers, tall grass and shrub thickets, fresh water lakes and marshes.
Behaviour
They nest near streams.
They are omnivorous and will feed in water.
